Thomas Pierce, was a native of Virginia, and came to this county when a young man and entered land in this township, where he lived and died. By occupation he was a farmer and came here in 1819 and took an active part in organizing the county. He was married about the year 1824, to Miss Lydia Ward, daughter of Thomas and Margery Ward. Nine children were born to them, namely: John M.; William O.; Samuel A.; Delilah J.; Anthony R.; Joab; Maria L.; Emeline E.; Thomas O. and Cordelia E., all of whom are living except John and Emeline. The father was active in public affairs but had no political aspirations. He died November 2, 1864, and the mother died in the latter part of November 1880. By good management and industry they had acquired a competency, leaving a fine farm of 320 acres. They belonged to the old Society of Friends, and were people of modest but real worth. Mr. Pierce was a Republican and was ever a firm adherent and supporter of the principles of is party.

# Surname: Pierce
# Sex: M
# Birth: 24 Aug 1800 in Londoun County, Virgina, USA
# Death: 5 Nov 1868 in Winchester, Indiana
# Burial: White River Cemetery 1
# Event: Travel 1819
# Note: His parents emigrated from Virginia to Ross County, Ohio by wagon when he was only one month old. They located on a homestead near Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio and were there as long as they lived. Thomas went with his brother Burkett, to Randolph County, Indiana in the fall of 1819.
# BLES: Randolph County, Indiana
# Note: The Indians were plentiful and troublesome. One of their tribe was killed soon after Thomas was there, and the old Chief thought he did it. One day he found Thomas sitting on a log by the river. He slipped up waved a tomahawk over his head and threatened to kill him, but finally told him he would not kill him this time, but for Thomas to take a good look at him, for the next time he saw him he would scalp him. That was enought for Thomas. He left Ross County, Ohio at once.
# Event: Land 1820
# Note: Some time in the year of 1820 he returned and took up a homestead east of Winchester and built him a two story log house, of two rooms, one upstairs, and one down. The house was pebble dashed; that is, it was plastered on the outside and while the plaster was still wet it was peppered with small pebbles, and then white washed. A remarkable coincidence , and worthy of mention is the fact of the number of generations born on this old homestead and still owned by a member of the family, a granddaughter, Ida Pierce Hickman. The generations born on this place was a son, Joab Ward Pierce, his daughter, Ida Pierce, her son Waldo Hickman, and his daughter Mary Elizabeth Hickman. A great great grandson of Thomas Pierce still lives on the old place.
# Event: Life
# Note: Thomas Pierce and his wife endured all the hardships and privations as well as a great many pleasures, incident to pioneer life. It was there they toiled and struggled to make a home for themselves and the little ones to come. Their homestead was nothing but a wilderness, and his dear wife (all honor to her dear name) helped to share those hardships, struggles, and pleasures as only a loving and true wife could do. While her husband was felling the trees, she was spinning the wool and flax to clothe her family. She made all their goods; made the garments and knit their stockings. Did her work and then had time to go visiting; she was a great knitter, she would knit as she walked; and they had to walk those days. She thought nothing of walking ten miles and sometimes carry her baby. What a vast change of that from today.
# Religion:
# Note: Thomas Pierce was a Quaker, went to church every Sunday, but was liberal with his children, letting each one choose their own religion. He was raised to believe the Devil was in the violin and yet when he heard the sweet tone he couldn't resist listening. Thomas was a good man, loved by all and his word was as good as his bond. No one was afraid to trust Uncle Tommie, as everybody called him. His wife, Lydia , had no special church, never the less, she was a grand woman, and loved by young and old. Her religion was her every day walk and if there's a Heaven, there she is.
